When you are commissioning a piece of bespoke jewellery to mark one of those important moments in your life, it’s reassuring to know you are dealing with expert jewellery designers who are passionate about what they do.
Unlike most other jewellers, we don't employ sales staff. We are all makers. In fact, we see ourselves as a jewellery workshop with its own showroom, rather than as a shop with a workshop. With us it's all about the design and making.
You deal directly with one of our skilled jewellery designers and goldsmiths who understand the technicalities involved, and can answer questions and guide you through the design process. Usually the goldsmith you speak to will be the one who will actually make your piece of jewellery.
Although most of our clients visit us in person, we frequently undertake commissions for bespoke jewellery from all over the UK and abroad, with all arrangements being made using emails and phone calls.
Whether it is an important birthday, a special anniversary, the birth of a baby, or maybe just Christmas or Valentine’s Day, we can create a beautiful piece of jewellery, designed with the recipient in mind.
A pair of unique handmade cufflinks makes a really special coming-of-age gift for a young man, and a beautiful cross is the perfect way to celebrate a first Communion.

If you want a unique piece of jewellery designed and made just for you, look for a bespoke jeweller. Some jewellers offer bespoke jewellery as an additional service. If you can’t find what you are looking for in their stock they will offer to make it for you. Aurum Designer-Jewellers specialise in bespoke jewellery. We have been designing and making unique custom-made jewellery for individual clients since 1985, so we have a huge amount of experience. We start by listening to your requirements. You might know exactly what you want or perhaps you are looking for some inspiration. It does not matter. During the course of a free design consultation we will draw out of you the information we need to design a piece of jewellery that will fulfil your requirements. We undertake commissions ranging from the plainest wedding band to very complex items. If you want diamonds we can supply GIA certificated stones. Through our contacts we can source gemstones of all kinds.
The cost of any item of jewellery is determined by the cost of the materials and labour needed to produce it. Any design can be tailored to accommodate the pocket of the customer. Aurum jewellers offer a free design consultation. Initially we don’t discuss price. We come up with your “ideal” design and base our quote on those exact specifications. If it fits your budget, fine. If not we ask you to tell us what you want to spend. We can then look at ways of scaling back the costs. This might involve using less gold or platinum or smaller diamonds. Because the item does not exist until you order it, you can set your own budget and then we’ll use the appropriate amount of materials. We are always happy to discuss individual requirements. Contact us to book a consultation.
The cost of a piece of jewellery depends on the cost of materials and labour in the item. Most jewellery sold in high-street shops is factory made using moulds. It is generally much less time-consuming to cast a piece than to fabricate it by hand. The same mould can be used many times to produce potentially hundreds of identical pieces. A handmade piece of jewellery might take many hours of labour, but the result is a unique item, so you might expect handmade jewellery to cost a lot more than mass-produced. However, when you commission something direct from the maker you cut out the middle-man. Mass produced jewellery is made by manufacturers who sell to the retailer, who then sells to the customer. Because of this the price of a handmade piece can be similar to that of a factory-made piece with the same material value. Aurum Designer-Jewellers creates handmade jewellery to commission, in gold, platinum and diamonds. We offer free advice and estimates.
If you want to have a hand in the design of your own piece of unique jewellery you need to deal with a bespoke jeweller. Where most jewellers buy in factory-made products which they then retail to the general public, a bespoke jeweller will create a unique piece to your exact requirements. It is important to choose a jeweller that designs and makes unique items from scratch. Unfortunately, some jewellers advertising a bespoke service simply assemble mass-produced components. The arrival of Computer Aided Design (CAD) has meant that people with no jewellery-making skill can design jewellery. It is easy for the unwary to be taken in when a “designer” uses a flashy computer program to select a stone, metal type and a setting style to produce a “unique design”. In reality, this is not bespoke jewellery. It is a customised design which constitutes a half-way-house between mass-produced and bespoke, allowing only limited possibilities. Aurum Designer-Jewellers specialises in truly bespoke jewellery. We start from scratch with every commission, which means you have control over every aspect of the design. Even if you don’t know exactly what you are looking for you can design your own jewellery! You’ll meet a highly-skilled craftsman who will guide you through the design process. It is our job to find out what you really want. By asking the right questions we’ll draw out of you the information we need about your taste and lifestyle. We’ll generally produce pencil sketches, and might show items if stock or photographs of previous commissions. Once we have arrived at design that fulfills your requirements we’ll have the specifications we need to calculate a price for you.
