We create fitted wedding rings to fit perfectly alongside a particular engagement ring. Many engagement rings are not straight, so they will not fit comfortably with a straight wedding ring. A fitted wedding ring follows the shape of the engagement ring, swerving around any protrusions, so that there are no gaps between the two rings.
Eliminating gaps between the wedding ring and the engagement ring means the overall effect is more elegant and more comfortable. When two rings fit perfectly together the scope for movement is limited, so friction is reduced, resulting in less wear to the rings. read more»
Any of our usual wedding ring styles can be made in a fitted version. The simplest fitted wedding rings are perfectly plain, but it is possible to apply interesting textures, inlay different metals, or set diamonds. Where diamonds are required we can match the size cut and quality of the stones on your engagement ring.
Where fitted wedding rings are set with diamonds there is the added benefit that the stones stay correctly aligned because the two rings are interlocked.
When making a fitted wedding ring we need to borrow the engagement ring for a short time. There are companies that claim to make "fitted" wedding rings without taking the engagement ring. By simply drawing around the engagement ring you could get a very approximate fit, but it would be impossible to achieve the perfect fit that we are able to offer without having the engagement ring to work to.
We don't carve a wax model out of wax and then cast it. - Our fitted wedding rings are truly hand-made. We work directly in the metal - platinum, palladium or gold. The process involves us making a wide plain wedding band in the correct finger-size. The goldsmith then cuts away metal on one side so that the client's engagement ring sits perfectly alongside it. This leaves a ring that is flat on one side and fitted on the other. The next stage is to set dividers to the desired width, and scribe a line parallel to the fitted edge. The goldsmith then cuts the opposite side of the ring, so that the band is the same width all round. This leaves us with a wedding band that fits perfectly, but has a flat top and flat inside. We then adjust these surfaces to match those of the engagement ring. Usually this involves some degree of rounding-off to achieve the desired profile (or cross-section), which in most cases matches that of the engagement ring. All the way through the process the goldsmith will be offering up the engagement ring to the wedding ring, checking all the time there are no unwanted gaps. This is a highly skilled and very painstaking process. Towards the end the fit might be checked between single strokes of the file. This is proper fitting! There is no way you can achieve this degree of fit without having the engagement ring to work to.
If we are making a plain fitted wedding ring, it is now ready to be sent to the Assay Office to be hallmarked. In some cases though, there is more work to be done first.
If it is going to be a diamond-set fitted wedding ring, we have to make holes for the diamonds. We mark out the positions of the stones, taking into account the style of the engagement ring. Sometimes the stones will need to line-up with diamonds in the engagement ring, and match them for size. Some rings will need to have another metal inlaid. - A platinum ring may have stripes of gold, or vice-versa. This involves filing grooves in the band, into which we weld stripes of the other metal. Some fitted wedding rings have both stripes and diamonds!
At the stage of sending the ring to be hallmarked, we have finished with the client's enagement ring. We'll give it a professional clean and polish before we return it. Whilst we have the engagement ring it is kept in our safe except when actually being worked with, and it is fully covered by our insurance until the client has it back.
When the ring returns from assay it goes through the finishing process, which involves several grades of emery, before stones are set, and it is finally ready to be polished.
The process just described is a very generic overview of how we create our fitted wedding rings. Engagement rings vary a lot, and many throw-up particular challenges to be overcome, using a wide variety of skills and techniques. We have been creating bespoke fitted wedding rings since 1985, so we have a huge amount of experience.
