The Brief
- Mrs D. wanted a modern star brooch in platinum with diamonds to celebrate a special birthday. It is possible to find Victorian star brooches, but these are normally in silver, and with old-cut diamonds. The client prefers the cutting of modern brilliant-cut diamonds and the clean white colour of platinum.
The Process
- We produced a page of pencil sketches, showing stars with different numbers of points ranging from six to twelve, and with different diamond arrangements. Once we knew that eight was the preferred number, we played with different stone arrangements, and it was decided that there should be a diamond set between the points, to make the star-shape less harsh. Once the design was agreed upon, we printed it out at different sizes and the size for the finished brooch was decided upon.
The Result
- Mrs D’s eight-pointed platinum star brooch features a central cluster of eight diamonds in claw-settings, and the points of the star are pavé-set with diamonds of graduating sizes. The diamonds between the points are set in a way that suggests small secondary points.
