The Brief
- Mrs A had an engagement ring that she no longer wore because the setting of the princess-cut diamond was too high, and the claws often caught on things. Also, because she prefers white metal these days she wanted the ring to be in platinum, rather than the original yellow gold. The new ring needed to be a simple contemporary design that can be worn on a daily basis. The ring also had to work well with a new platinum wedding ring.
The Process
- Mrs A contacted us initially by e-mail, and we produced a page of line- drawings for her to consider. Having eliminated most of theinitial ideas, narrowing the selection down to just two favourites, the client came for a design consultation, and we discussed the project in detail. In the end she decided on a style that was a combination of two of two of our designs. We broke -up the original ring, and the old gold mount was returned to the client to keep for sentimantal reasons. One of our goldsmiths then made a new setting for the stone, and the finished ring was ready in just under a month.
We unset the diamond from the gold engagement ring and produced a platinum ring with a rub-over setting that sits much lower on the finger.
The original mount was returned, and Mrs A intends to have the gold used in a future design for her daughter.
The Result
- Mrs A’s new diamond engagement ring sits perfectly with her platinum wedding ring. The stone is set just above the height of the band, so it is perfect for everyday wear.
