The Brief
- Mr C had inherited some jewellery from his late mother. None of the rings fitted his wife's hand, so he wanted some of the stones used to make a new ring in her size. Amongst these items were an emerald engagement ring and a baguette diamond eternity ring. Both were quality pieces, but had seen better days. - The emerald was scratched and also had a couple of chips on the edge. The eternity ring was broken and missing two stones. It was decided that these two damaged rings would be used for the project.
The Process
- We un-set all of the stones and gave them a good clean. The emerald was sent to our lapidary to be re-polished. A couple of the baguettes were damaged so were discarded, as re-cutting would not be cost-effective for stones of this size. With the emerald in the middle, the the remaining stones were sufficient to go half-way around the finger. We produced a page of sketches showing some ideas for the setting.
Mrs C wanted a ring that would be smooth and would not catch on clothing etc, so we agreed that there should be no claws on the ring.
The client picked a design with a yellow gold setting for the emerald, with the diamonds in platinum. When the emerald had been re-polished it was a shade smaller, but back to it's former glory. We produced a rubbed-over setting to fit the stone. This will protect it from knocks. The platinum band was made, to take the baguette diamonds.
The Result
- Mrs C now has a beautiful new ring, incorporating stones that have been passed down the family, and can be passed on again to further generations.
