Libertine is the latest collection from the compelling jewellery brand William Cheshire. Here he takes inspiration from the passionately subversive characters of life. “The libertine has always been portrayed as a male character and I wanted to invent a faux perfume brand called Libertine for women. . then imagined how it might be encapsulated and worn”. The resulting necklaces all represent faux perfume bottles that the Libertine might keep close. Inspired by hundreds of different forms of perfume bottles, from the vintage glass techniques to the dark mysterious finish, they have a purposefully opulent feel to them. With a historical sensibility they hold a mystique and a danger while retaining wearable style. Now the collection has expanded to rings, necklaces , earrings and bracelets. . and timelessly continues. "Escape the politely organized”.
With a BA honours degree in furniture design William was employed full time by an Islington based designer and it was here he developed a talent for jewellery. A large part of his time was spent designing customer commissions and collections for the shop and designing for a number of celebrities. In an apprentiship atmosphere William learned many of the jewellery skills and subtleties he values today.
His inspirations come from the diverse polarization of the classical, to the freethinking ethos of punk/pop culture. This mix gives the work an exciting and original feel combining elements of the familiar, with more diverse and enigmatic themes.
With silver forming the majority of the work, William has turned to stunning gold and black plating techniques to enhance the design. Combining enamel detailing with precious stone setting, the lasting effect creates striking ranges of colour and variation throughout the new Libertine range.
